Samuel A. Hovey, 82, of Mackinaw, IL, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at Reflections Memory Care in Morton, IL. His gentle, infectious smile will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Sam was born August 29, 1938 in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Samuel and Martha Johnson Hovey. He married Mary E. Wheat October 26, 1958 in Fort Dodge, IA. She survives. Also surviving are three children, Jodi (Tim) Schaefer of Morton, IL; Jill (Gene) Westre of Humboldt, IA; Chad (Shelley) Hovey of Mackinaw, IL; ten grandchildren, Erin (Andrew) Braun, Amanda (Sean Creeden) Schaefer, Andrew (fiancée, Laurie Schmidt) Schaefer, Emily Schaefer, Andrea (Nick) Wilson, Curtis (Ashley) Westre, Erik (Lauren) Westre, Sarah (Dalton) Andrews, Matthew (fiancée Samantha Head) Hovey, Samantha Hovey; five great grandchildren; one sister, Marjorie Bruland of Mason City, IA; one sister-in-law, Bernice Hovey of Fort Dodge, IA.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Thora Olson; three brothers, Conrad, Sherman, and James.
Sam graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High School, IA in 1956 and Waldorf College in Forest City, IA in 1958. He worked at Badger Co-op Elevator from 1958-1966. From 1966-1972, Sam was manager of Somers Coop Elevator. He continued his career as the manager of Forest City Co-op Elevator from 1972-1982. In 1982 he joined Forest City Bank and Trust in the Farm Loan Department until 1984. Sam was the bank president and CEO at First Security Bank, Mackinaw, IL, 1984-2003. He was a member of Advent Lutheran Church, Morton, IL, and Mackinaw Lions Club.
Cremation rites will be accorded. Haensel Funeral Home in Mackinaw, IL is assisting the family with arrangements. Burial will be at North Lawn Cemetery in Fort Dodge, IA at a later date.
The family would like to thank the staff at Reflections Memory Care and Transitions Hospice Care for the care that was given to Sam.
